  47. addresses given are bad' here is an exampple of a text from within 
  48. 'ham-equip digest' (same for 'info-hams') which I cant answer (see the From: 
  49. line) because of the address given in it. I dont have the time and am not 
  50. interested in typing the two lines of address. Maybe you shoulkd get your 
  51. software fixed and present concise addresses in the message headers?

  87.     We spent about 2 and 1/2 years in Jeddah in the mid 80s. 
  88. Generally communications seemed to be quite restrictive. I have heard a 
  89. Saudi station from the east side. It was an American that was working 
  90. for an oil company. I also worked a ham who was out of Jeddah on a 
  91. dxpedition in India I beleive. He worked as a pilot for Saudia airlines 
  92. and if I remember correctly he was a Canadian. If you check the call 
  93. book you could possibly record hams listed there and contact them when 
  94. you get there to find out about the regulations.

  172. I have a 50 MHz "driver" amplifier for an NMR device.  It was made by
  173. ETO (the same people who make the Alpha amateur amplifier). Unfortunately
  174. ETO won't tell me anything about the amp because they manufactured it
  175. for another company. They wouldn't even tell me the name of the company!!
  176.  
  177. I have the circuit diagram but what I want to find out is at what power
  178. level it was used at.  I would also like to find out what the transformer/
  179. power supply is good for.  The valve (tube) is a 3CX800 equivalent but
  180. some of the componentry looks whimpier than 800 watts. (the output connector
  181. is a BNC!).  If the power supply can cope with it, I could upgrade the
  182. other components to make a very nice 50MHz 800 watt amp.

  184. The p/n is AD101D Driver Amp.   If anyone recognises this device I'd appreciate
  185. any information.

  249. The key word here is "translation".  Whether or not you will be able 
  250. to pass 13 or 20 wpm by translating dits and dahs will be a matter or 
  251. personal ability...most people can not copy above 10-12 wpm this way. 
  252. "Copying behind" is a technique which is quite effective at higher 
  253. speeds, but I don't know of anyone who uses that technique while still
  254. having to consciously "translate".  
  255.  
  256. I've never had to "unlearn" counting dits and dahs because I did not 
  257. learn it that way, but I understand it _is_ difficult.  Try to forget 
  258. what you know (!) and learn again listening just to the sound and 
  259. rythym (easy to _say_!), and shorten the letter gaps to force an end 
  260. to conscious translation.
  261.  
  262. As has been mentioned here before, you _may_ be able to pass the exam 
  263. using the count and translate method, but you will have a great deal 
  264. of difficulty actually using code this way...if you actually intend 
  265. to use it.

  315. 5V, TONGO. Baldur, DS6SI, is now active as 5V7DB. Most of his activity
  316. is on CW (with some RTTY) on 15, 17, 20, 30 and 40 meters. Apparently,
  317. the RTTY operator is DJ6JC and is traveling with Baldur. The QSL
  318. information is unclear at this time for RTTY contacts, they may go to
  319. DJ6JC (Listen for instructions). QSLs for CW and SSB go to DJ6SI. (Just
  320. a reminder! One green stamp is not enough to cover return postage from
  321. Germany.) The length of this operation is unknown at this time.
  322.  
  323. C2, NAURU. Ron, ZL1AMO, became active this past weekend as C21/ZL1AMO.
  324. He usually operates mainly CW and seems to favor 30 and 40 meters. His
  325. length of stay is unknown, but it is rumored he will be traveling to
  326. T31 next. QSL via CBA.
  327.  
  328. D6, COMOROS. JA1ELY, JA1ETQ, JA1IDY and JL1UXH are currently in the 
  329. planning stage to be active from D6-land. No dates have been mentioned
  330. as of yet, but the group plans to be operational on CW, SSB, RTTY, SSTV,
  331. the satellites and on all bands. Stay tuned!
  332.  
  333. DX TIDBITS..... Effective October 1st, Selim, OE6EEG, will cease to be
  334. QSL Manager for the following stations: A71AL, HZ1MM, SU1AY, SU1ER, 
  335. SU1RR, SU1SR, YI1DZ and 7Z1IS...... Kash, WB2RAJ, continues to 
  336. communicate with Lou, ST2AA, and is trying to have Lou send the logs
  337. stateside for ST2AA and ST0K. Once the logs are received the cards will
  338. be printed. Please be patient. Meanwhile, Lou is off the air due to rig
  339. and commerical power problems......

  341. FR/G, GLORIOSO. Rumor from 256 Group is that FR/G tentatively is
  342. scheduled for December 1994 and again for July 1995. The operator on
  343. FR/G will probably be Jacques, FR5ZU. It is believed he only operates
  344. on SSB nets, some RTTY but no CW.
  345.  
  346. IOTA NA-034. Steve, W4/YV5DTA, will be active October 3rd and 4th from
  347. Anna Maria Island, which is in the Flordia State West Group. The operation
  348. will only be on 20/15 meters and CW only. QSL to: Esteban J. Morao, 850 E.
  349. Commercial Blvd. # 131, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33334.
  350.  
  351. J6, ST. LUCIA. Several Southwest Ohio DX Association members will return
  352. to St. Lucia for a CQWW SSB contest DXpedition. Activity will begin 
  353. October 22nd and last for 2 weeks (November 5th). Operations will be on
  354. 160-10 meters (including WARC bands) on CW, SSB, and RTTY. This is the
  355. first SSB contest effort (multi/multi class) by the J6DX crew who won the
  356. 1993 CQWW CW in the multi/single class. J6DX or some other special calls
  357. will be used during the contest period. QSL contest QSOs via N9AG. 
  358. Individual callsigns/QSL routes will be used outside the contest.
  359.  
  360. PJ7/PJ8, ST. MAARTEN. Jim/KI4HN, Scott/KA9FOX, and Mike/N0BSH will be
  361. active from October 25th to November 1st. The group plans to operate 
  362. signing PJ8Z as a multi-single entry in CQ WW SSB. Operators will will
  363. sign PJ7/ before and after the contest. Activity will be on 160-10 meters
  364. including the WARC bands. KA9FOX and N0BSH will also spend a couple days
  365. in KP4-land after the contest. QSL all calls via KA9FOX.
  366.  
  367. SY1MF IS NOT MOUNT ATHOS. Several have asked about the location of SY1MF.
  368. According to several on Internet who have worked him, he is NOT in Mt. 
  369. Athos. The callsign is actually in use by SV1MF who is on an IOTA 
  370. expedition to Salamis (EU-075), one of the Greek Islands in the 
  371. Peloponnisos East Group. Thus, Monk Apollo appears to be the only 
  372. active station from  Mt. Athos.
  373.  
  374. V3, BELIZE. Operators Mike/W5ZPA, John/KV5E, Nellie/XE1CI and Stan/W5JYK
  375. will be active October 4-7th, from Ambergris Caye (IOTA NA-073), signing
  376. V31MP, V31JY, V31CK and V31YK respectively. The team will try to have
  377. three stations on the air, if possible. They will be on all usual DX
  378. frequencies operating CW, SSB and RTTY. QSL to each home call with SASE.
  379.  
  380. VP5, TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS. Tom/K2TD, Jack/N2VW and Mike/WB2YOF will
  381. be operating as VP5R, a multi-single entry in the CQWW SSB Contest on
  382. all bands during the contest. Before and after the contest, from October
  383. 25 through November 1, they will be signing VP5/home call, emphasizing
  384. CW and the new bands. QSL VP5/call via home calls, and VP5R via N2VW, via
  385. the bureau, or direct with SASE or SAE and return postage. (Please note
  386. that VP5R is re-issued; QSL this operation only via N2VW).
  387.    Also, there will be a group from the Florida DX Association to return 
  388. to VP5 (Providenciales) NA-02 to participate in the CQWW SSB Contest.
  389. The operators will sign /VP5 before and after the contest while signing
  390. VP5Y during the contest. Look for operators: Steve/AB4UF, John/AC4ET,
  391. Dick/K4UTE, Bill/KQ4GC, Ron/N4KE, Mike/NF4L, Jim/NU4Y and AL/W3ZNB. All
  392. QSLs go to K4UTE (Please do not send bureau cards to VP5 bureau!).

  394. VP8, FALKLAND ISLANDS. Jon, G8XFT, will be active from Mt. Kent in the
  395. Falkland Islands from October 18th until approximately February 20, 1995.
  396. His activities will be on all HF bands plus 2m and 70cm on all voice 
  397. modes. He hopes to be active also on Packet, Amtor and RTTY. He does not
  398. plan any CW operations, although he stated an occasional slow morse 
  399. contact may be possible if requested. Jon is currently in the process
  400. of setting up a P.O. Box to receive QSLs and will publish the address
  401. at a later date.

  403. UA0, STOLBOVOY ISLAND. Sanyi is currently signing UA0QJG/0 and can
  404. usually be found on 20 meters CW between 1130 and 1300z on/or around
  405. 14003 kHz. Stolbovoy is located in the Lyakhovskiye Island group and
  406. has an IOTA number of AS-029. QSL via UA1AGC.

  408. XY, MYANMAR (BURMA) UPDATE. Robert, K4MZU, had a chat with Ray HS0AC on
  409. September 21st and Ray indicated that JA1UT, himself and a few others
  410. did complete the SSTV demo with Burma Authorities a few days ago. They
  411. made several contacts throughout SE Asia using the call XY1HT for 2 
  412. days. No remarks were made regarding final outcome and further 
  413. operations, but looks like some progress is being made.

  441.   I know that it is 'bad form' to post to a news group
  442. without readinf for a few weeks, reading the FAQ, etc,
  443. but I'm leaving the country monday on business and am
  444. looking for some software to help me study for the
  445. tests.  I will be gone for 6 weeks and I hope by the ttime
  446. I get back I will be studied up enough to get my ticket!
  447. At a local swap meet I got a HAM CD ROM for $10 which 
  448. had what I'm looking for, but with out of date questions.
  449. What I would like to find is some share ware programs
  450. that will quiz me on the test pool for the General, Extra
  451. and Advanced tickets.  I have studied the books and think I 
  452. can pss the Novice and Tech without a quiz program, and I have
  453. some morse code trainers.
  454.   Does anyone know what I am looking for?  I'm very strapped
  455. for cash and would like to avoid purchasing programs if I
  456. don't have to.

  494. I've seen many posts over the months requesting satellite frequencies of
  495. one satellite or another. I just got my copy of "The HamSat Handbook" by
  496. Anthony R. "Tony" Curtis, K3RXK this morning. Flipping through this book
  497. I  am  pleased to see an up to date (Feb 1993)  description of all OSCAR
  498. satellites, their history etc.
  499.  
  500. Chapter 1 covers the early history, titled "The First Space Satellites".
  501.  
  502. Chapter  2  "The  Story  of  Orbital  Satellites Carrying Amateur Radio"
  503. discusses the history of all OSCARs to 1993+.
  504.  
  505. Chapter  3  is  devoted to modes and frequencies used by the satellites.
  506. (This  would be the  reference  material that many are seeking, although
  507. chapter 2 also provides a fair bit of good information).
  508.  
  509. Chapters 4 and 5 covers Space stations and SAREX.
  510.  
  511. And finally chapter 6 covers Balloons, meteors and EME etc.
  512.  
  513. To recap, if anyone wants more information on what's available up there,
  514. I think that this is one very good source for amateur radio enthusiasts.

  536. Hello..N2LQS for This Week In Amateur Radio...We are in need of a little
  537. help on this end. We would like to bring the bulletin service's editing
  538. proceedure up to date, toward this end, we were donated an old IBM XT 8088
  539. machine, with a hard drive, and a Soundblaster compatible sound card (AdLib)
  540. internal.  Unfortunately, we do not have any software or drivers for this 8-bit
  541. card.  Our search of various on-line services and local BBS's with CD shareware
  542. disks on-line have proved fruitless.  So here we are on the net.  Does anyone
  543. out-there know of DOS based soundcard software that will allow us to record,
  544. play and edit on this soundcard on this old gear?  If so, please let us know
  545. here on the net, or via packet at WA2UMX.ENY.NY.USA.NA.

  547. Also, while I'm here, we are also looking for a FM exciter (2 or 3 watts) for
  548. use here in the albany area to put This Week in Amateur Radio on our second
  549. local repeater. No luck on this locally either.

  592. Ah yup, my mistake.  I was thinking it was 1.4*sqrt(2h), but something
  593. in my fingers must have made me type it in correctly, even though
  594. the brain was off in never never land.  I suspect I was thinking of the
  595. factor of 2 you get when two equivalent stations are trying to work
  596. each other, but messed it up.  What's interesting is how much beyond that
  597. though a reasonable SSB station can get.  I know from my own experiences
  598. that 150 watts into a 12 dBd antenna at less than 40 feet allowed me
  599. to communicate with similar stations out to about 120-150 miles except under
  600. the very poorest of conditions.  That's as opposed to the 18 miles one
  601. might otherwise expect.  Also, I believe that even a normal FM station
  602. does better than sqrt(2h), but maybe I'm just on a relative high point.

  617. Interesting stuff about ASTA and satellite dishes.  I'm in a small sub-
  618. division that has restrictions allowing satellite dishes and tv antennas
  619. not exceeding 20 feet in height but forbids antennas for cb, ham, or swl!
  620. Right now I have a 20 meter dipole hung off the chimney (kind of in the
  621. back, out of sight) and a random zepp affair made of # 30 wire and fed 
  622. with homebrew ladder line.  I'm tempted to put up a Butterfly mini-quad
  623. and call it a "TV" antenna.  I'm also tempted to put up multiple tv 
  624. antennas on 20' masts (on top of the rear flat roof) and hang multiple 
  625. dipoles!

  627. But with QRP 5w cw I've worked 46 WAS, 37 DXCC and WAC (just lack a JA
  628. card for that one!)
